The Boston Tea Party (1773)
The image to the left shows the Sons of Liberty boarding British ships and dumping about 92,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor. This was an act of retaliation against the Tea Act. This act of defiance showed resistance against the British Control and helped unite many colonists against the unfair taxes that were being imposed on them. This is where the famous phrase "No Taxation without Representation" comes from. This bold act did, in fact angered British government, which made them respond with the Intolerable Acts. Eventually, the Tea Act and the Boston Tea Party helped lead to the American Revolution.

The Tea Act (1773)
To the right of this page, you will see an image of a document discussing the Tea Act. The Tea Act was a law passed by the British Parliament. This allowed tea to be directly shipped to the American colonies. Even though the price of tea became cheaper, it still included a tax. This reinforced the British rig.ht to tax the colonies without representation. Many of the colonist believes that this is unfair because they believe their government should have the power to tax them and not the British Parliament. This also hurt local merchants who depended on selling tea to make a living. The colonists felt like their rights and freedom were being threatened, which helped lead to the American Revolution
